Darkwood was commissioned in 2012 by Neil Ashcroft, a lifelong member of the Blackley Brass Band and was presented in recognition of the bands 75th anniversary. The work is in three movements The Boggart, House on the Hill and Blackley Village.

The work was selected as the third section test-piece for the 2017 Regional Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
