I am very interested in using overtone scales and spectral harmonies in my music, and I was considering how interesting it is to take a natural phenomenon like the harmonic series, and make aspects of it "crystallise" into something that can be used for an artistic purpose. This sparked off a whole range of images, such as salt or honey crystallising, that inspired me to write the piece, in which overtone scales are the building blocks.
