Commissioned by the University of Hull for the bicentenary of the French Revolution in 1989, it wasoriginally performed with strings, a brass quintet, 2 pianos and organ, and later arranged for full orchestra. The composer has no objection to its being performed with just one soloist, transposing the solos up or down an octave as appropriate.
