Automaton, for oboe, cello, and piano, is a piece written for members of the Schubert Ensemble and oboist George Caird. The piece uses prime numbers to plan the trajectory of the piece. Each instrument has a simple melodic motif which is repeated regularly at intervals of prime numbers. The piece begins with all three instruments starting together, and finishes when all three motifs finally meet again.
