LIFTED is a live elevator music installation that challenges social, cultural and aural contexts of the live musical performance "event" (Small, 1998). Featuring singers performing in public lifts throughout the United Kingdom, LIFTED is a curated experience that encapsulates many elements of musical activity. Seeking to remove the context within which one might traditionally experience a musical event, LIFTED aims to create a novel experience for audiences, from which new meanings, interpretations and relationships may arise. Inspired by and "dedicated to the lifts and elevators of Planet Earth" LIFTED draws attention to the potential of the lift as a creative space, its engineering, beauty, the people within and their inner thoughts, while creating a sense of wonder as the doors - the stage curtains - open to reveal people dressed in work clothes who burst into song. The lift is a stage, and LIFTED is the antithesis of background Muzak. LIFTED is elevator music that cannot be ignored.
