Among my very earliest works is a Piano Sonata I which I wrote whilst a student of composition with Edmund Rubbra who played the slow movement, I'm pleased to recall. The sonata was written partly in a twelve-note manner but with strong tonal references. The Piano Sonata II was written many years later in a different style and was premiered by Anthony Green who subsequently performed the work three times. He will perform it again at Schotts Studio on December 14th, 2019.
The sonata is a virtuoso work but with a very simple second movement which contrasts the outer two movements which are contrapuntal but with strong chordal passages. The work uses the entire range of the piano.
