When I was deciding what to call this piece (the title came last - its not a piece about something other than itself, particularly) I read a darkly comic poem called What every Girl should know before Marriage by Mona Arshi in her collection 'Small Hands'. One of the lines in the poem was this: 

Always have saffron in your kitchen cupboard (but on no account ever use it)
