Hecate, "the distant one," was a minor Greek goddess associated with the moon and, later, the Underworld. As well as having a beneficent influence on farming she was a teacher and protectress of witches, ghosts and sorcerers and was believed to haunt tombs, cross-roads and places where murders had been committed.
