This work was written while the composer was studying under Einojuhani Ratavaara at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki while in receipt of a Finnish Government State Scholarship and a Welsh Arts Council Award to Young Artists.  It was first performed and broadcast by David Cowley (oboe), Owain Arwel Hughes and the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in 1980.
