Additional Information

This quartet portrays the close personal friendship between Alfred E Rodewald (1862-1903) and Edward Elgar (1857-1934).  The first movement, Scherzo, is based on the Enigma theme.  The second movement, Elegy is based on the slow movement of Elgar's second symphony, which is thought to be as much an Elegy for Rodewald as for King Edward VII.  The third movement, March, is derived from Pomp and Circomstance Marches Nos 1 & 2.  No 1 was dedicated to Rodewald and his Liverpool Orchestral Society and No 2 to their mutual friend, through whom they met, Granville Bantock (1868-1946).
