Additional Information

This piece was commissioned by Marianne Ehrhardt, who gave its first performance in the Purcell Room in 1982.  It attempts to evoke memories of a woodland walk on a warm summer's evening.  Insects buzz among the trees, bats flit across the path; swifts and, later, nightjars can be seen hawking insects, but the tranquillity of the wood remains undisturbed as darkness falls.
