intermezzo-for-wind-quintet

Additional Information

Intermezzo for wind quintet was composed in 1987 for the Leeds Wind Quintet. It has a symmetrical shape and is in seven sections, with the first three being mirrored and developed in the final three. The opening section, presenting a series of elaborations of two basic musical ideas leads directly into the second, a brilliant cadenza-like passaage for the clarinet. This section ends abruptly, as if torn off and leads into the third which is very slow and homophonic. A central scherzando, rhythmic and irregular, casts its shadow across the final three sections.
